A Symbol of Hope
More than any other creature, the butterfly shows the potential for transformation which, in world politics, might be compared to the transition from war to peace, or from poverty to prosperity. In the Middle East, Africa, and elsewhere, Albright wore the butterfly as a symbol of hope.
Albright often wears her butterflies in clusters, with one or two almost flying off her shoulder. The belief that butterflies are souls searching for reincarnation is reflected in the word psyche, which is Greek for both soul and butterfly.
